Five Books With… Sea Settings

Hello hello, and welcome or welcome back to my little bookish corner of the internet. Today I’m sharing another post in my Five Books With… series, and this time, we’re looking at books where the sea plays a significant role in the story.

This was actually my husband’s idea, and while it might just be because we were driving along the coast when we were talking about it, it’s a really great suggestion. The sea can be used in different ways throughout books; it can hold people captive, creating a locked-room type setting. It can be full of magic and mysteries that we can’t possibly understand on the land. It can be all these things and so many more.

When I started making this list, I was anxious I wouldn’t have five books I’ve read that I could list, but I swiftly found I was worrying in the wrong direction. Narrowing this down to just five was tricky, and I hope you’ll enjoy the variety I’ve picked. There’s plenty more books out there where the sea is vital to the story, and I’d love for you to let me know your favourite in the comments!

The Drowning Summer

Beautifully written and just the right amount witchy, The Drowning Summer is a deliciously eerie story perfect for reading under a full moon.

Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man named Shin—as well as a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits—Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all.

But she doesn’t have much time: A human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking…

There we have it. Five very different books, all centered around the sea. I love living by the sea, and honestly I’d miss it too much to ever live anywhere else. Will you be picking up any of these watery books any time soon?
