Hello hello and welcome to my first blog tour of April, Blackstoke by Rob Parker. This book is all featured around the false sense of security that being at home – or more precisely, being in an expensive home – can give us, and how horror is waiting around every corner, wherever we live. Sleep tight, kids!
Here’s the synopsis from Blackstoke:
WEALTH. SECURITY. PROSPERITY. NONE OF IT MATTERS IN THE DARK.
In a quiet cul-de-sac on the newly-opened, much sought-after Blackstoke housing development, the first handful of families are moving in. These neighbours, thrown together for the first time, are looking forward to settling into their bright new lives—with varying degrees of enthusiasm. The estate couldn’t be nicer, but it’s a big change for everyone.
Then things start to happen. Bad things. As if something doesn’t want them there.
As the new residents try to make sense of events, the buried history of the area makes itself suddenly, deeply apparent—with a series of shocking, violent escalations.
Soon, no one is safe, as the original powers of Blackstoke return to reclaim their territory and birth right in a final night of dark revelations, gore and bloodshed.
This thriller works away at your psychological barriers gradually from the very start. Small estate? Still being built? Only five houses? Immediate setting for a thrilling situation.
As things start to build up, the tension becomes so taunt you could cut it with a knife, which is probably not a good thing given the situations! It starts with little the little things. Tiny things. Things that could happen to you. And then it gets bigger, and scarier, and ultimately reaches a point where there’s nowhere to turn and pure terror is running through every page.
The author has huge strengths in his ability to provide strong characterization for everyone we encounter, making each person strand out and be truly unique – and in many cases, be truly dislikable. It’s a brilliant skill to not just bring a character into clear vision, but to bring them into focus enough you can develop strong opinions on them!
This book is not for the faint of heart. Dare you brave the Blackstoke estate?
