Book Review – This Lie Will Kill You

I know. A murder mystery. It’s a huge surprise to see one of these on my blog because I hardly ever feature them. Here’s a few that I absolutely haven’t focused on here:

Now that we’ve established I absolutely do not have a problem with young adult thrillers and mysteries, we can get back to the matter at hand. Which is a young adult thriller slash mystery. Who saw THAT coming?

Synopsis
Tell the truth. Or face the consequences.
Clue meets Riverdale in this page-turning thriller that exposes the lies five teens tell about a deadly night one year ago.

One year ago, there was a party.
At the party, someone died.
Five teens each played a part and up until now, no one has told the truth.

But tonight, the five survivors arrive at an isolated mansion in the hills, expecting to compete in a contest with a $50,000 grand prize. Of course…some things are too good to be true. They were each so desperate for the prize, they didn’t question the odd, rather exclusive invitation until it was too late.

Now, they realize they’ve been lured together by a person bent on revenge, a person who will stop at nothing to uncover what actually happened on that deadly night, one year ago.

Five arrived, but not all can leave. Will the truth set them free?
Or will their lies destroy them all?

Review
For a large portion of this book, I found it rather tame and somewhat predictable. However, at about the two thirds point, things started to twist and turn a bit more, and I found myself reading until 1am because I couldn’t put it down.

It’s an interesting book as at first none of the characters are particularly likeable, meaning you’re not too fussed whether they live or die. That sounds horrible callous, but when a book tells you someone is going to, you normally have some kind of leaning or preference. It took me a while before I did here. I was absolutely sure – and only became more certain – that I was fine with something happening to Parker as he was just such an abusive arsehole. My heart broke for Ruby, and I felt huge sympathy for Juniper, who really only ended up sucked into it all by mistake. Brett needed a hug and Gavin needed a backbone. But really – aside from one of them – all the mistakes they made were simple, human, teenage errors.

And that was the motto I took from this book if nothing else; it was a fierce reminder how stupid teenage mistakes can cause the biggest of consequences.

While the plot might have been lacking on some of the finer details, the beautiful qualities of the writing really won me over. Author Chelsea Pitcher really has a natural way with words, and I would have been quite happy to read another few hours worth of her work, it was so engaging.

If you’re looking for something that will grab your attention but won’t be all consuming, with twists and turns that you don’t see coming but are glad they’re there – you’ll enjoy this.
