Halloween Reads – 2021

Hello hello and welcome to my – spooky! – bookish corner of the internet. Today I’m going to be sharing some of my favourite spooky reads for the season. Even with today being Halloween, it doesn’t mean spooky season is over; it’s not time to dig out the Christmas books just yet! I love Autumn so I’m going to revel in it for as long as I can.

Witchy Books

Malice – Sapphic Sleeping Beauty retelling with twists, turns, and magic.

These Witches Don’t Burn – Teenage girl starting to find her magical footsteps while avoiding her ex-girlfriend and trying not to get killed.

Spellslinger – Book one in the best selling series, Kellen seems not to have any magic in a society that thrives on it. “Seems not to” is key…

Sorcery of Thorns – Elisabeth knows all sorcerers are evil. So when she ends up encountering one, the only person more suspicious than Elisabeth is the sorcerer.

Carry On – What happens to the Chosen One when the bit you’re chosen for is something you know you’ll be really, really bad at?

Things That Go Bump

The Crooked Mask – This can be read with or without the previous book, The Twisted Tree, and focuses on Norse mythology, and how it impacts Martha. Intriguing and haunting.

Mina and the Undead – Vampires! Sisters! An absolute throwback to the 90s! Oh my.

City of Ghosts – This middle grade ghostly tale focusing on friendship as well as the freaky. Written by the stunning V.E. Schwab, you’ll enjoy this regardless of your age.

Raising Hell – All it took was a few teenagers getting a spell right for things to go very, very wrong.

Lakesedge – To protect her brother, a teenage girl has to look deep into the eyes of the Lord Under himself.

Murder and Mystery

The Appeal – Told through emails rather than narrative, can you spot the clues throughout these exchanges and solve the murder?

Truly Devious – The first in a series, Stevie Bell gets into exclusive Ellingham Academy to solve the case the school is famouse for… But it won’t be straight forward.

True Crime Story – A classic whodunnit for the podcast age.

Dark and Shallow Lies – How do you keep a secret in a town full of psychics? More, how do you solve a murder in one?

S.T.A.G.S – This series opens with the line “I think I might be a murderer.” – what more do you need to know?

Thrillers

The Girls I’ve Been – When Nora ends caught up in a bank heist, it might be the worst day the thieves have ever, because they just don’t know who they’ve got on their hands.

Ace of Spades – Aces, an anoyomous texter, is revealing secrets about students. But this is far, far bigger than they could ever imagine.

The Girls Are Never Gone – A podcaster goes to stay at a haunted house to prove that there’s no such thing as ghosts…

How We Fall Apart – The top student of an exclusive school goes missing, and her three friends are put in the frame for her disappearence.

It’s Behind You – Welcome to the reality TV show… that will scare you to death.

Thanks for joining me for this spook-tacular post. I hope you find something to read, or some things to put on the Christmas shopping list – for you or someone else! If you’ve got any recommendations, feel free to drop them in the comments.
