The 20 Question Book Tag

Time for another book tag! It’s always fun to do one of these every now and again. I’ve willingly tagged myself in Kimberly’s post over on My Bookish Bliss as I haven’t seen this tag before. Unfortunately we don’t know where this tag started out, but if you happen to know, please tell me so I can credit them!

The Question

1. How many books are too many in a series?
   I think this totally depends on the series. Just like with TV, sometimes knowing when to stop adding to a series is just as important as writing it in the first place. I’ve read books with big numbers of books, and simple duologies, both of which have been the right thing for that particular series.

2. How do you feel about cliffhangers?
That very much depends on the above! Are we talking about a cliffhanger-but-in-six-months-you’ll-get-another-book-and-an-answer, or are we talking about a cliffhanger-and-that’s-the-end-of-the-series–thanks-very-much? Temporary cliffhangers will make me want to pull my hair out in a good way. End of series cliffhangers? Nope.

3. Hardback or paperback?
Hardback. I do have a lot of paperbacks, but I always prefer a hardback.

4. Favourite book?
Erm, of this week?! I struggle with thinking about my favourite books, because there’s just so many that I absolutely love, even this year. The book that has stayed with me the longest and that I’ve loved for the longest time is Les Miserable by Victor Hugo.

5. Least favourite book?
I tend to not finish books I’m really not enjoying, but I did have to read Enduring Love for 6th form English, and I absolutely hated it. Even reading it on a sandy beach in Australia, where I went to teach for a few weeks during my time at college, I couldn’t bring myself to enjoy it.

6. Love Triangle: yes or no?
Yes, if played correctly. It does entirely depend on the author and the content though.

7. The most recent book you just couldn’t finish?
I had real problems with reading A Court of Silver Flames. My issues with this book are numerous and I think I’ll be writing a piece especially about it because it’s been bothering me so much, and it was especially frustrating as I’m such a big fan of A Court of Thorns and Roses. This book was a huge disappointment.

8. A book you’re currently reading?
I’m making my way through my list of books for my Topeical Readathon and my March TBR so I’ve got several books on the go, as per normal. I always tend to have a physical book, an ARC and an audiobook on the go.

9. Last book you recommended to someone?
This year I’ve really be recommending the Rivers of London series to people, all kinds of readers, because I feel it speaks to so many different groups of readers.

10. Oldest book you’ve read?
I studied Classics at college so I’ve read a lot of ancient Greek but when I’ve also read a lot of ancient Egyptian texts, so I suppose those would be the oldest.

11. Newest book you’ve read?
I’m reading a lot of ARCs at the moment, but the latest published book I’ve read is Sweet and Bitter Magic. I loved this sapphic story of self discovery, and you can find my review with some top quotes here from my stop on the blog tour.

12. Favourite author?
This is a difficult one! I suppose the books I’ve been reading the most of recently is Ben Aaronovitch, the author of the Rivers of London series mentioned above. I’m working my way through the series, and you can find my reviews of book two, book three, and with book four and book five to come.

13. Buying books or borrowing books?
Buying, always, unfortunately for my bank account! I do borrow books from friends but I like have books surrounding me.

14. A book you dislike that everyone else seemed to love?
I’m going to come back to A Court of Silver Flames again. It’s been praised by so many book bloggers and book lovers, and it was quite frustrating – and odd! – being on the other side of it.

15. Bookmarks or dog-ears?
Bookmarks exist for a reason!

16. A book you can always reread?
A Court of Mist and Fury. It’s the second book in the series, and is easily my favourite. I’ve been known to just read that book by itself and ignore the others before, and I’m sure I will again.

17. Can you read while listening to music?
Yes. In fact, I can listen to music, read my Kindle on its stand, and crochet at the same time. I’m a total weirdo. I just need one of those beer hats for coffee now.

18. One POV or multiple POVs?
It depends on the book. I’ve read and loved both, and I’ve also read and hated both. Some books are best suited to one, and some to the other.

19. Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?
I absolutely love sitting down to read a book in one sitting, it’s one of my favourite indulgences. When I find a book, and I find the time, it’s a great moment. One of the books I did this most recently with is The Girls I’ve Been, which I reviewed yesterday, and is a total five star read I recommend to anyone.
